NSW Health expert panel: no evidence of higher incidence of Gastroschisis in northern NSW

An expert panel formed to look into cases of gastroschisis in the Northern Rivers area has found no evidence to support concerns that there is a higher rate of the condition in northern NSW.
NSW Health brought together the expert panel to address growing community concerns that there is a higher number of reported gastroschisis cases in the area.
Gastroschisis is a treatable congenital abnormality of the abdominal wall for which the cause is unknown.
NSW Health Chief Health Officer, Kerry Chant, said she hoped the investigation went some way toward allaying the fears of residents in the Northern Rivers area.
“People are of course concerned about anything that may affect the health of their baby and Gastroschisis, although treatable, is a distressing condition for parents and of course their child,” Dr Chant said…
